[French Royalty] Signed Documents and Letters. Jean Baptiste Gaston, Duke of Orléans (1608-1660). Two documents signed ("Gaston"), parchment, 3 and 4 pages, no place, c. 1650s. Documents are also boldly signed by Anne Marie Louise d' Orléans(1627-1693), Duchesse of Montpensier and Henriette-Catherine de Joyeuse (1585-1656), Princesse de Joinville. Untranslated. Age toned. Horizontal center folds; Louis Philippe, Duke of Orléans (1640-1701), document signed ("Philippe d' Orléans"), 1 page, parchment, 11¼" x 22", no place, no date. Untranslated. Large bold signature. Moderate staining with two large brown spots. Vertical and horizontal folds.; Louis Philippe D' Orleans (1773-1850), letter signed, 1 page, on black bordered stationery, 2 pages (letter & attached address label), 10" x 8", Palais Royal, London, October 30, 1824. Louis XV (1710-1774) He was known as Louis the Beloved (Louis le bien aimé) and ruled as King of France from 1715 until his death in 1774. He succeeded his great-grandfather Louis XIV at the age of five. Until he reached maturity in 1723, his kingdom was ruled by Philippe II, Duke of Orléans as Regent of France; the duke was his maternal great-uncle, as well as first cousin twice removed patrilineally. Document signed ("Louis") as King, on vellum, 1 page, 10¼ x 13 in., Versailles, April 15, 1769. Being a cavalry commission for Louis François de Royeu de la Motte. Normal age toning and minor staining bottom right border. Vertical & horizontal folds.

Louis XVI (1754-1793) King of France from 1774 until the monarchy was abolished by the French Legislative Assembly on September 21, 1792. He was found guilty of high treason, and executed by guillotine on January 21, 1793. His death brought an end to more than a thousand years of continuous French monarchy. Document signed ("Louis") as King, on paper, 3 pages of a bifolium, 14¼ x 9½ in., Versailles, December 24, 1782. Being a financial report to the Royal Finance Council, approved by Louis. Strong large signature.

Louis XVIII and Charles X. Document signed by two future Kings of France: "Louis Stanislas Xavier," the future Louis XVIII (1755-1824), who reigned from 1814 to1824, except for the Hundred Days in 1815 after Napoleon escaped from Elba, and by "Charles Philippe," the future Charles X (1757-1836), who reigned from 1824 until the July 1830 Revolution which led to his abdication. The document is headed, "We Princes and Brothers of the King of France," 1 page, 9 x 7¼ in., Coblentz, February 5, 1792. Regarding 20,000 pounds that Monsieur the Count of Sainte Marie, a Captain in the Regiment of French Guards, is to employ in the service of the King. Louis XVI was under house arrest at this time, after having been apprehended trying to flee France with his family in July 1791. On September 21, 1792, less than eight months after this document was signed by Louis' brothers, the monarchy was abolished and the First French Republic was proclaimed. Louis XVI would be guillotined on January 21, 1793. When his young son, the titular Louis XVII, died in prison in June 1795, Louis Stanislas Xavier became the titular king but lived in exile until 1814 when he would ascend the throne as Louis XVIII. A rare document with the signatures of two future Kings.

Napoleon I. Manuscript letter signed ("Nap"), 1 page, 9 x 7¼ in., St. Cloud, June 23, 1811. During the Peninsula Campaign, Napoleon writes to "the Major General," (his Chief of Staff Berthier) saying 900 men from the Regiment of the Vistula would be arriving at Pau on July 31 and other troops would be arriving from Italy and artillery units would arrive in Toulouse. All had to be organized by the first day of August. The general should communicate with the general officer at Pau since it was going to be the place of passage to Arragon. The general officer would frequently inform him of the state of affairs at Pau and would correspond with him and with General Mouthiou.

Phillip III of Spain (1578 -1621) King of Spain (1578-1621). Considered to be a congenial and pious ruler, Philip's political reputation abroad has been largely negative; he has been criticized as an "indistinguished and insignificant man," a "miserable monarch," whose "only virtue appeared to reside in a total absence of vice." Manuscript letter signed ("Yo El Rey") as King, on vellum, 1 page, 7½ x 8 in., Madrid, March 1, 1608. In Spanish. To the Archbishop of Granada. A letter of thanks and request for the Archbishop to bring books for the King's review: "I beg of you affectionately to bring about the qualification of the said book as soon as possible…and that you will bring this book and any other books that you might have of this quality when you come here." Strong bold signature. Seal affixed verso. Diagonal paper loss across lower bottom portion of page does not affect the signature or text. Overall in very good condition.

Jean Baptiste Bernadotte (1769-1844), French Revolution Marshal appointed by Napoleon who,in 1818, was elected King of Sweden (Charles XIV John) and Crown Prince of Norway (Charles III John). Document signed ("J B Bernadotte") as Marshal, 1 page, folio, Headquarters Hanover, c. 1804-1814. Being a military appointment for Captain Gustavé of the Fifth Regiment of Hussards. Strong bold signature. Documents have some age toning and light staining but overall are in very good condition.

The lot also includes an unidentified ALS, dated July 20, 1732, signed "Berwick" and a sepia toned engraving of the Earl of Uxbridge. The documents are various sizes and are dated from the 1700s to 1900s. Overall in very good condition.

[Duc d'Orléans] John Law (1671-1729) Scottish economist who was controller general of finances of France under the Duc d'Orléans, who was regent for Louis XV. Manuscript document signed ("Law"), 1 page, in French, 12¾ x 8 in. (Paris), Mar. 15, 1720. Translated, the document reads: "S.A.R. [His Royal Highness, the Duc d'Orléans] has permitted the gentlemen Couteulx, bankers in Paris, to have 3,000 livres on their premises to execute the appointments made in Paris March 15, 1720." The banking house of Le Coulteux was involved with Law's financial schemes as related in Geneviève Daridan's 1994 work: MM. Le Couteulx et Cie, banquiers à Paris: Un clan familial dans la crise du XVIII3 siècle.

Law created the first Central Bank in France and founded the Mississippi Company to support trade in the French colony of Louisiana. After initial success, financial panic followed.

Guevaro, Ernesto "Che" (1928 -1967) Argentine-born revolutionary who played a prominent role in the Cuban Revolution (1956-59). Trained as a physician, he was a theoretician and tactician of guerrilla warfare, and a guerrilla leader in South America. After his execution by the Bolivian army, he was regarded as a martyred hero by generations of leftists, and his image became an icon of leftist radicalism and anti-imperialism.

Document signed ("Che"), as Minister of Industries, 1 page, 19½ x 14¼ in., 1963. Uneven browning to paper, with numerous specks. A diploma of merit to Santiago Padrón Pérez, who was selected as the best director of consolidated businesses and institutes of the ministry, for work done in the leather derivative business in 1963. Signed in tiny letters, in green ink, just above the printed "Che." Brown seal of the Ministry of Industries, with red and blue ribbons at lower right. Accompanied by an 11¾ x 15½ in. original, vintage photograph of Mr. Pérez receiving the diploma from Che. Photo is not in good condition, having numerous tears and creases, primarily around the edges, but the image is quite clear. Rare.
